![]() Greenhouses from Atlixco, Morelos and the State of Mexico come to the fair A walk in the flowers: Atlixco’s fair The Flower Fair is currently taking place in one of the most beautiful cities in the state of Puebla, Atlixco. Atlixco’s fair takes place annually during the summer, which is one of the best seasons of the year. The people gather under a roof made of iron sheets, which creates a very special atmosphere, were the smell of corollas and the colors of each one of its petals and leaves is intertwined with the scent of burnt sugar from colorful cotton candies and the fragrance of bottled pulque. The heat makes people blow air on their faces, using a fan or moving the air with the hat or cap that they brought along to protect them from the sun. Greenhouses from Atlixco, Morelos and the State of Mexico come to the fair each year in order to sell what they produce. Each year, one’s eyes meet the beauty of the numerous flowers displayed at the fair. Each year this spectacle is the reflection of the public’s preferences: last year’s bonsais and lilies seem to have been replaced by the Brazilian logs or dahlias, which are quickly announcing themselves as the public’s favorites. During one whole week, people native from Atlixco, Poblanos and people from other states visit the fair and buy their favorite plants, choosing their favorite color and their preferred scent, always finding the right plant to take care of, either planting it in the garden or keeping it inside the house as an adornment. {mospagebreak title= The blossoming of edition number seven} The blossoming of edition number seven
And what about the prices? Well, it depends. One can find great things from ten pesos up to fifty pesos. However, if one’s interested in things like grafts or plants that require more attention, one can pay between five hundred to forty thousand pesos. The exhibit also has a food court selling ice-cream, sherbets, cotton candy, cheese bread, coffee and wines brought from Puebla’s Sierra Norte. {mospagebreak title= The new among the green} ![]() Dahlias, as we said before, are extremely abundant this year The new among the green In Atlixco’s flower fair, the pansies, daisies and tulips have not been sought out as much as past years. They remain hidden from the customer’s view, opening the way for more exotic and diverse flowers, which due to their beauty, fill the flower shops and constitute the most expensive adornments. Because of their variety and beauty, orchids are among the costumer’s favorite flowers. One can find purple, lilac, yellow (simulating a tiger’s skin), dotted, white with red and vibrant pistils, succulent orchids. Dahlias, as we said before, are extremely abundant this year. Their corollas are intense, heavy and they are the size of a hand. One can find them in purple, yellow and pink. The origin of the dahlias reminds us of Chignahuapan’s patios, from the sierra. Those enormous patios filled with plant pots where flowers are planted and then forgotten, who, in spite of the rain and other climate conditions, still bloom. Nowadays, the buyers will keep them in a small and confined space, tied to the plant pot. It can be that flowers turn out to “be shy” and may not bloom, or it maybe the flowers will adapt to the spaces provided by the city. {mospagebreak title= Small chiles fron Holland} Small chilies from Holland
They can be consumed by humans: who wouldn’t want to have one’s own supply of Mexican’s favorite spice? Right after seeing them, one wants to lay hands on them and bite them. You can buy them for fewer than fifty pesos. The plant grows and expands in their pot; this is why one has to move it to another plot, take care of the soil and nourish it. Coming from the neighboring state of Morelos, the chilimovil –that’s how it’s called- arrived loaded with these curious plants, which immediately caught the attention –as well as the money- of the visitors. {mospagebreak title= The thirst for the succulent} The thirst for the succulent
Succulent plants actually span over fifty different plant families, covering approximately 10,000 diverse plants. All of these plants have particular colors, shapes and flowers. Some of them happen to be more attractive than others due to their shape and others due to their type of flowers. As if this wasn’t enough, some are tiny pants which bloom annually and others are full grown trees. These fifty families include the cactus family or CACTACEAE. These cactus families are constituted by about 1,810 different species all around the world. It is important to notice that Mexico is the country with most species of this kind, approximately 800. In addition, most of Mexican cacti are endemic, which means that these plants only grow in one specific place or that their habitat is very small. In this sense, Succumex.com is dedicated to producing and taking care of this type of plants. When one arrives to the flower and plant fair, the beauty of these plants catches one’s attention immediately. People ask and purchase their favorite. Succumex.com is also in charge of the preservation of this endemic specie. Through its web site, it propagates information so that the upcoming visitors know that all succulent plants have an official permit to be commercialized and produced. All succulent plants come from botanic gardens, greenhouses or nurseries which have their SEMARNAT UMA registration up to date, depending on each plant. Lastly, succusmex.com upholds the Behavior Code stipulated by the IOS (International Organization for Succulent Plant Study). The code states the parameters for the commercialization of these plants. |
